How Can We Think Independently in the Age of AI?
Short answer
Before accepting an important answer, write down what you know, what remains uncertain, and which assumptions you are making. Use AI to explore other perspectives, then verify evidence, explain the reasoning yourself, and own the decision.
A question can smuggle in a conclusion. Instead of asking why a team is irresponsible, ask what caused the delays and which evidence supports each possibility. AI can help generate counterarguments, but try explaining the reasoning in your own words before accepting a recommendation. For consequential decisions, check reliable sources and speak with affected people. Independent thinking does not mean refusing help; it means keeping responsibility for judgment.
