How can remembering life is finite change what we do today?
Short answer
Awareness of limited time can help us stop postponing a good action. Rather than doing everything, choose something worth doing and give it your attention.
In Book IV, Marcus Aurelius warns himself against acting as though he has ten thousand years ahead of him, and turns his attention to living well while he can. The emphasis is the quality of present conduct, not a race to fill every hour.
A small action may matter more than a distant achievement: correcting an error, responding to a reasonable request, or offering an overdue apology. These are editorial examples of how the reminder might enter ordinary life.
Choose one worthwhile action you have postponed and identify a first step for today. Then ask whether rushing or treating someone unfairly would undermine its value. Reading reference: Meditations, Book IV; Book II also emphasizes attending carefully to the task before us.
